Question:  How was Mathilde’s appearance altered because of the life changes?

(Explain by using evidence from the text.  Follow the acronyms/prompts below).

 

Answer by creating a topic sentence:

  • Mathilde’s appearance had changed a lot from the beginning of the story to the end.

Cite examples and Explain:

  • In the beginning of the text, Mathilde was described as “one of those pretty and charming girls born.” Then at the end of the text, Mathilde’s “hair was badly done, her skirts were awry, her hands were red.”

Sum it up:

  • Therefore, it is obvious that the pressure for working so hard in order to pay off her debts caused Mathilde to appear older and wear tattered clothes.

Answer without prompting phrases:
